Mumbai, 25 Sep 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has released the final production estimates for major agricultural crops for the year 2023-24, revealing a record-breaking year for India's agricultural output. The total foodgrain production is estimated at 3322.98 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), surpassing last year’s total of 3296.87 LMT by 26.11 LMT.
The remarkable growth in foodgrain production is attributed to record yields of rice, wheat, and rapeseed & mustard. Rice production reached an all-time high of 1378.25 LMT, 20.70 LMT higher than the previous year's 1357.55 LMT. Wheat also set a new record at 1132.92 LMT, up by 27.38 LMT from 2022-23’s production of 1105.54 LMT. Additionally, the rapeseed & mustard output soared to 132.59 LMT, a historic peak.
This growth comes despite challenging weather conditions, including drought-like situations in southern states and a prolonged dry spell in Rajasthan during August, which adversely impacted the Rabi season. The moisture stress led to reduced yields in pulses, coarse cereals, soybean, and cotton.
