New Delhi, January 22 (Commodities Control): Chilli prices in major markets across the region showed a mixed trend today, following a significant drop in the previous month. While prices for Teja and Teja Deluxe varieties saw a rise in prominent markets such as Guntur and Warangal, prices in Guntur remained lower due to increased arrivals.
In Guntur, the price dip led many farmers to delay harvesting, which subsequently resulted in reduced arrivals in the market. Meanwhile, Khammam continued its operations today with a slight uptick in arrivals. Market sources suggest that a combination of factors, including virus infestations and fruit rot disease, may impact overall production, contributing to the uncertain market conditions.
Additionally, reports indicate that a small group of farmers is harvesting green chillies, which could further affect production levels. The day's total A/c arrivals stood at 72,000 bags, down by 21,000 bags compared to the previous session. Guntur reported a sharp decline, with arrivals at 35,000 bags, a decrease of 25,000 from the previous session. In contrast, Khammam and Warangal saw higher arrivals, with 25,000 and 12,000 bags reported, respectively, both up by 4,000 bags from earlier in the week.
The overall arrivals for the day included around 75,000 new bags, with 70,000 coming from Guntur and 5,000 from Khammam. Prices remained steady to weak as anticipated due to the improving new crop arrivals. However, experts predict that price pressures are likely to persist as the harvest continues, compounded by a nearly full warehouse that may put additional strain on prices.
While prices are currently at multi-year lows, a dramatic decline is unlikely, leaving the market in a state of cautious anticipation for the upcoming weeks.
