Mumbai, 28 June 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): Chana prices in major markets have weakened as buyer activity remains low. The discount of matar prices compared to chana has shifted demand from processors towards matar. In Delhi, prices for Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh lines have dropped by Rs 50 per quintal, now quoted at Rs 6,925/7,000 per quintal.

In Mumbai, CNF quote was not available for for Tanzanian origin chana, while Australian origin chana remained steady at USD 915 per metric tonne. In Mumbai market imported chana of Tanzania and Australia origin quoted stable at Rs 6,3000 quintal and Rs 7,000 per quintal respectively. Prices of all expenses paid (Bilty) Desi chana declined between Rs 20-50 at major trading centres. In Delhi, Indore, Akola, Raipur and Kanpur market UP/MP Line Chana prices lost Rs 50, whereas at Jaipur market Desi quoted Rs 25 softer.

Mandi prices show mixed trend at major mandis, with some support from lower supply. Local traders report that despite fewer arrivals, the inactivity of buyers has led to price drops in several markets.

Looking ahead, chana prices are anticipated to remain within a broad range. The significant supply constraints resulting from poor production are likely to support price stability. However, the abundant availability of low priced matar will cap any substantial gains in chana prices. Additionally, the absence of stockists and speculators, due to imposed stock limits, will restrict demand to purely consumption needs, further curbing any significant rise in chana prices.
