MUMBAI, 27 Jun (Commoditiescontrol): Representatives of Sugar Sector lead by senior BJP leader Harshvardhan Patil, president of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited, and the federation's managing director, Prakash Naiknavare, met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and MoS for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol in Delhi on Monday to address the challenges facing the sugar industry.
Patil emphasized their long-standing request for an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugar, which has not been raised since 2019, making it difficult for sugar factory owners to operate. "Besides the MSP for sugar, we also discussed the ban on sugar exports and restrictions on ethanol production," Patil noted.
Earlier this month, the federation, along with the Indian Sugar Mills Association, presented the cost components of sugar production to the Union Ministry to support their demand for an MSP increase. Despite the government's annual increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price for sugarcane, no adjustments have been made to the MSP for sugar, which currently stands at Rs 31 per kg.
"We have requested the government to allow sugar exports," Naiknavare added. The federation also called for the removal of all restrictions on ethanol production to help alleviate the industry's financial strain.
