MUMBAI, 27 July (Commoditiescontrol): India is on track to harvest a record Tur crop this season, thanks to a significant expansion in cultivation area across key growing states and farmers' preference for Tur due to its attractive prices compared to other crops. Benefiting from a favorable monsoon season, Kharif Tur acreage has surged to unprecedented levels. The crop’s short duration and the varied start to the monsoon have further encouraged farmers to experiment with Tur as a lucrative alternative.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Tur acreage has expanded to 38.53 lakh hectares this season, up from 28.73 lakh hectares the previous year. Leading this expansion are Karnataka and Maharashtra, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Farmers have opted for Tur due to its better returns and the low prices of competing crops.
A state-wise analysis reveals intriguing insights. The Maharashtra Agriculture Department reports a 20% year-over-year increase in Tur acreage, reaching 11.6 lakh hectares, driven by favorable prices. Similarly, the Karnataka Agriculture Department notes a significant jump to 14.7 lakh hectares from 6.6 lakh hectares last season, attributed to a delayed drought that facilitated more planting.
Currently, most farmers have completed sowing, and the crop is in the vegetative stage. Weather conditions have been mixed, with some districts receiving above-average rainfall and others experiencing near-normal precipitation. Field updates indicate that crop conditions are generally good to excellent. However, given past seasons’ issues with wilting, it is crucial to monitor crop health as rainfall decreases.
The forecast for the next two weeks suggests drier weather over the main Tur growing regions. This will enable farmers to perform intercultural operations, which will aid in better crop establishment and development following periods of heavy rainfall.
In conclusion, favorable market conditions and weather patterns are driving a potential record increase in Tur acreage this season, positioning farmers for a potentially bountiful harvest.
